Computer Tune-Up Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will my computer really run better by having a Computer Tune-Up?

A: Independent tests confirm that cleaning your computer and defragmenting your hard drive(s) can increase your efficiency.  In one test performed by NTSL, a Windows workstation running Excel and Outlook showed an average increase in performance of 80.6% after defragmentation.  A Windows workstation running Excel and Outlook showed an average increase in performance of 219.6% after defragmentation.

Q: What does "defragment your hard drive" mean?

A: Fragmentation is caused by creating and deleting files and folders, installing new software, and downloading files from the Internet.  Computers do not necessarily save an entire file or folder in a single space on a disk; they're saved in the first available space.  After a large portion of a disk has been used, most of the subsequent files and folders are saved in pieces across the disk.  When you delete files or folders, the empty spaces left behind are filled in randomly as you store new ones.  The more fragmented the disk is, the slower the computer's performance will be.

Q: Why not just defragment the hard drive?

A: Although this would help the performance of the computer it would not address all the preventable problems:

  • Performing a physical cleaning can reduce the chance of physical damage to your computer.  Dust and dirt can damage the electronic equipment and render your CD and / or floppy drives unusable.
  • Removing unnecessary files can reduce clutter.  More space on your hard drive will be available.
  • Checking for common errors can reduce the chance of future problems.  We check the date of your common programs against the latest available products.  We also check the virus scan signature files to verify that your program will protect you against a virus outbreak.  We also check to see if your computer could benefit by an update.

Q: Can't I do this myself?

A: Yes you can.  It will probably take you longer to perform these steps than it will take us to perform them for you.  In addition, we will check for errors that you may not notice.  Finally, even though you can do this yourself, you may not get around to actually performing these tasks.  By having Rudnick Computer Consultants perform this work, you will know that it's done and done correctly.

Q: We already have your Computer Support Plan  Doesn't that cover the features of the Computer Tune-Up?

A: The Computer Support Plan is a valuable service with several components.  One of these is a list of preventative maintenance recommendations to keep your computers in optimal condition.  The Computer Support Plan does not include performing the actual prevention work.  The Computer Tune-Up combines nicely with the Computer Support Plan to keep your computers running efficiently.

Q: Can we purchase this and cancel your Computer Support Plan?

A: You can but you would lose valuable services.  The Computer Support Plan includes two main components, prevention and support.  The prevention component includes checking your system, developing a customized prevention plan for each computer and an annual plan for computer equipment.  The support component includes free, unlimited telephone support, emergency appointments scheduled within one business day, and a problem log so you can record computer problems as they occur.
